Embrace the Beginnings: Nurturing a Gluten-Free Journey with Love and Wholesome Living.

Our Gluten Free Family Journey: Adding Pets to the Mix

About a year into our gluten free journey, the kids asked for a pet. I grew up in a house full of animals, so I was totally on board. My husband, Pete, had never had pets as a kid, so he was just as excited as the kids—maybe even more! We wanted to start small, something cuddly but manageable, so after a lot of research and discussions, we decided on two rescue guinea pigs, Coco and Lumiere.

Coco, the bigger of the two, looked like a little capybara—adorable. Lumiere was black and white and so cuddly! But as thrilled as I was to welcome these little guys into our home, I couldn’t shake the anxiety that came with it. With Bear’s coeliac disease, the thought of cross contamination was always in the back of my mind. I worried about the tiniest traces of their food ending up on his clothes or hands, even though I knew he’d be good about washing his hands after handling them. But still, you can’t expect a kid to change his shirt every time he snuggles a guinea pig, right?

One of the biggest deciding factors for us was that we could feed the guinea pigs a completely grain free diet. We chose Selective Naturals Grain-Free Guinea Pig Food, which I ordered through Amazon on a monthly subscription or picked up at Pets at Home. We also used Rosewood Naturals Meadow Menu, another grain free option available on Amazon. (Just so you know, these aren’t paid promotions—I’m just sharing what worked for us.)

I found a local source for chemical and grain free hay, so I knew our little guinea pigs were getting the best. This gave me peace of mind, and so we welcomed Coco and Lumiere into our lives without the constant fear of cross contamination. They brought so much joy into our home and lived long happy lives.

After we got the hang of caring for guinea pigs, the idea of getting a cat came up. The kids were thrilled, and honestly, so was I. We started with a Bengal we named Kiki, but she turned out to be so feisty and full of energy that we decided to get her a friend —a Maine Coon named Zeus. Kiki and Zeus quickly became the heart of our home.

We, of course, decided to keep our cats on a grain free diet too. There’s a surprising amount of fantastic grain free cat food out there, and Kiki and Zeus have their favorites. Here are a few that went down well:

Untamed

Wellness Core

Thrive

Applaws

Scrumbles

Wild Freedom

Katkin

Blink!

I’ve found the cost of grain free pet food to be reasonable, and it’s reassuring to know that we’re doing the best for our pets and our family. Having these pets has brought so much joy into our lives, and knowing that they’re on a healthy, gluten free diet means I don’t have to worry about Bear petting or feeding them.

Our journey into gluten free living has extended beyond just our meals—it’s become a lifestyle that even our pets are a part of. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Living Gluten Free: Our Family’s Journey

If you’ve read Rediscovering Life: My Gluten Free Journey, you’ll know that I started living gluten free before my son, Bear, was diagnosed with coeliac disease. After his diagnosis, our household became a mix of gluten free living for Bear and me, while my husband and daughter continued with their regular diet.

But let me tell you, managing a household with mixed diets was no walk in the park. The constant worry about cross contamination was overwhelming. I found myself obsessing over every little crumb on the countertop or floor, terrified that the tiniest speck of gluten could be kryptonite for my son. I became so anxious that cleaning turned into a full time job, especially during breakfast and lunch prep—gluten crumbs from baked goods and bread seemed to get everywhere.

Dinners were slightly easier because I could focus on naturally gluten free meals like roasted meats, veggies, potatoes, rice noodle stir-fries with gluten free soy sauce, salads, and one-pot dishes. But even then, the fear was in the back of my mind. I remember one day when my husband accidentally used the gluten free butter for his toast. Luckily, I caught it in time, but it left me wondering: what if I hadn’t? The thought of missing something like that in the future was causing me so much anxiety.

Not long after Bear’s diagnosis, I did more research and spoke with his paediatrician, which led me to transition our daughter, Cece, to a gluten free diet as well. You can read more about that in Cece's Path to Better Health. With Cece also gluten free, my husband Pete was the only one still eating gluten at home.

Then, one day, Pete came to me and said, “It doesn’t make sense to keep buying gluten foods just for me. I want to go gluten free at home, too.” It was the sweetest, most kindest gesture, and he had no idea how much it meant to me. Pete works as a development chef and often travels for work, so he gets plenty of regular food when he’s at work and away. But at home, he chose to support our family’s needs by going gluten free.

I can’t even express how much that decision eased my worrying mind. After waiting so long to get Bear’s diagnosis, all I wanted was for him to be healthy and for his little tummy to heal. Knowing that our home was truly gluten free—a safe space for all of us—lifted such a weight off my shoulders. I’m so grateful to Pete for his understanding and support. It’s a huge relief not to have to worry about gluten lurking in our home anymore.

Discovering a Healthier Lifestyle: Our Gluten Free Life

Going gluten free has been an experience that has transformed our family, not just because of medical needs like celiac disease and gluten intolerances, but also because it's led us to make healthier food choices. Before Bear's diagnosis, it was all too easy to grab a warm pastry snack or lunch from the bakery section at the supermarket or grab a takeout. I can still remember the grocery runs when we'd shop feeling peckish and end up with a pastry filled lunch at home after unpacking or grabbing a take out because I didn't feel like cooking.

But things changed when we had to rethink our diet. When we wasn't able to rely on those quick fixes, we got creative in the kitchen, experimenting with gluten free baking and concocting homemade versions of our favourite takeout dishes, (I will add some links here soon to our favourite versions of homemade takeout). This change forced us to be more mindful of what we ate, and surprisingly, it became a positive challenge. We started cooking more from scratch, using fresh ingredients, and making healthier choices as a result.

The benefits went beyond just avoiding gluten. For me, cutting out gluten led to a noticeable reduction in inflammation; no more bloating and tummy aches, my achy joints felt better, and my hair stopped thinning. It's incredible how much better I felt when I began truly listening to my body and paying attention to what it was telling me about the foods I was consuming.

When my son, Bear, was diagnosed with celiac disease, it was a wake-up call. It made us all more conscious about our diet and we paid attention to how different foods made us feel. We realised that just because a product is labelled "gluten free" doesn't automatically make it healthy. I remember Bear's paediatrician advising us not to rely solely on processed gluten free foods, but to focus on naturally gluten free options. It was good advice that I always keep in mind. We began exploring whole foods like fruits, vegetables, proteins, and naturally gluten-free grains, finding delicious ways to incorporate them into our meals. Of course, we still eat some processed gluten free foods just not as often.

Like anything in life, it's all about balance. The variety of tasty, gluten filled foods was endless and made for easy choices. With gluten free foods on offer not being as plentiful pushed us to be more creative. We've discovered new flavours and dishes we might never have tried otherwise (links coming soon). It's been a journey of learning and growth, one that has made us healthier and more connected to the food we eat.

In the end, living a gluten free lifestyle has been more than just a medical necessity; it's been a lifestyle transformation. By embracing this challenge, we've found a new appreciation for the foods that nourish us and sometimes the creativity it takes to enjoy them. In the process, we've learned to listen to our bodies and prioritise our health in a way that feels genuine and fulfilling.

Do you have a family get-together coming up where you'll need to stay at a house where gluten foods are a staple? I completely get the anxiety that comes with this. Anxiously waking up in the middle of the night a week before, panicking about not getting contaminated, is something I've experienced too.

Be Honest and Set Expectations

It's crucial to be upfront with your family members about your needs regarding your gluten free diet. Explain why it’s important for your health and how they can help limit your contact with gluten. Everyone’s situation is different; whether your entire household is gluten free like mine, or just one or two family members are gluten free like ours used to be, it's important to set clear boundaries.

It might seem daunting to explain, but everyone should know where they stand to avoid misunderstandings. If a hotel or Air B&B isn't an option, here are some tips to try to help you stay safe in a gluten-consuming household.

Help Them Understand

Wouldn’t it be amazing if your family fully understood the importance of a gluten free diet and made every effort to accommodate you? Sometimes, it’s just a matter of a few nights, and a little effort can make a big difference.

However, I understand that some family members might not grasp the severity or be willing to accommodate your needs. They may take the “take us as you find us” attitude. I have both scenarios in my extended family, and the contrast in our experiences with them is significant. With my husband’s family living at the opposite end of the country, our visits can be challenging.

Key Talking Points to Share with Family

Here are some points to discuss with your family to help them understand why avoiding gluten and cross-contamination is so important:

Damage to the Intestines

"When I eat even a tiny bit of gluten, it damages my small intestine. This makes it hard for my body to absorb the nutrients I need from food, which can make me very sick. Avoiding gluten completely helps my gut heal and keeps me healthy."

Severe Symptoms

"Gluten makes me feel really poorly. I can get symptoms like stomach aches, fatigue, headaches, joint pain and sickness. By staying gluten free, I can avoid these awful symptoms and feel much better day-to-day."

Serious Health Risks

"If I keep eating gluten, I’m at risk for serious long-term health problems. Sticking to a gluten free diet helps prevent these dangerous conditions."

Cross-Contamination Dangers

"A tiny crumb of gluten can make me sick due to cross-contamination. This is why it’s important to use separate cooking utensils and keep my gluten free food away from gluten-containing food. Being extra careful in the kitchen helps keep me safe."

Overall Well-being

"Following a strict gluten free diet isn’t just about avoiding the immediate symptoms. It’s about my overall health and well-being. When I’m gluten free, I have more energy, think more clearly, and feel better overall. It’s extremely important for my long-term health."

With the help of a compassionate doctor, a crucial blood test was finally scheduled, offering a ray of hope in our darkest hour.

In January 2018, after months of agonizing anticipation, we finally received the results of Bear's blood test. This long-awaited revelation brought with it a mixture of emotions—relief and trepidation.

Our Coeliac Adventure: Navigating the Unknown Together for a Free Future

Pete's Story

Reflecting on those challenging days, I can't help but marvel at how profoundly it shaped Bear and me. While our spirited Cece sailed through toddlerhood, Bear and I found ourselves entrenched in a daily battle, doing our utmost to navigate the hurdles. Amidst it all, there was Pete, my rock, quietly shouldering the weight of supporting our family in every possible way.

Witnessing Bear, the light of his life, teetering on the edge must have been a heart-rending sight for Pete. He longed to be with us, to lend a hand, but he headed off to work each day, ensuring the bills were paid and we had a roof over our heads. I used to think it was the easier path for him, a brief respite from the whirlwind of doctor's visits, Bear's ups and downs, and the daily juggle. Little did I know the inner turmoil he faced, questioning if he was doing enough, making a real difference. Yet, he was, in every sense of the word.

He was my unyielding support, a pillar of strength during those trying times. His unwavering presence was the glue that held us together, even when it felt like everything was falling apart. Looking back, I'm flooded with gratitude for the rock he was, for standing by my side through it all.

Introduction: Embarking on the coeliac journey with my children has been a transformative experience. Cece, just a baby when Bear's symptoms first emerged, started showing signs herself as a toddler. Her journey, like Bear's, has been unique, teaching us the importance of tailored approaches to coeliac care.

Cece's Signs: Cece displayed classic signs of coeliac disease - a distended tummy, dark circles under her eyes, and a preference for certain foods. Despite her symptoms, she maintained a healthy weight and was proportionate for her age. Her food preferences leaned towards meat and fruit, suggesting an instinctual understanding of her body's needs.

Navigating the Gluten Challenge: When Bear's diagnosis necessitated a gluten challenge for further testing, we all embarked on the journey together. However, the toll it took on our health and well-being led us to revaluate. Painful tummies, sleepless nights, and a general feeling of unwellness prompted us to prioritize our immediate health and opt out of the challenge.

Cece's Path: The paediatrician advised a cautious approach for Cece, suggesting that she undergo testing when she was older and better able to comprehend the significance. In the meantime, we adopted a gluten-free lifestyle for her. Cece enjoys a full head of thick, lustrous hair, a healthy tummy, and a pain-free existence.

Balancing Testing and Emotional Well-being: While confirming Cece's coeliac status through testing is important, it's equally crucial that it happens at a time when she feels ready. We've empowered Cece with knowledge about what foods align with her health, instilling in her a sense of responsibility for her well-being.

Choosing a Unique Path: Bear's 6-week gluten challenge was guided by his memory of beloved foods, making the decision somewhat straightforward. A family trip to Alton Towers added a touch of adventure to the process. However, for Cece, who never had those experiences to draw from, the choice is more nuanced.

Embracing a Healthier Lifestyle: Both Bear and Cece have embraced their gluten-free lifestyles with grace and gratitude. Fast food and takeaways have become a distant memory as they revel in the vitality and health that accompanies their dietary choices.

Conclusion: Our coeliac journey has taught us that each individual's path is unique. Through understanding, support, and tailored approaches, we've come to appreciate that living gluten-free isn't a limitation, but a powerful choice for a vibrant, healthy life.

Cece's Path to Better Health

Greetings,

Allow me to transport you to an Autumn day in 2017, a time when discomfort wove itself into the fabric of my daily life. It wasn't just the emotional strain of caring for Bear and his ongoing symptoms that weighed on me, but also the relentless physical pain I grappled with.

Imagine a body ablaze with pain - my lower abdomen, back, and thighs, but it was the searing pain in my hips that was truly unbearable. Unrelenting headaches seemed to steal away my very vitality. It was a symphony of suffering that ultimately led me to a pivotal decision.

I'd spent countless hours at the doctor's office for my son, Bear. To be honest, I hesitated to voice my own struggles - It was paramount to me that he received the care and attention he needed, and I feared diverting attention from his needs with my own laundry list of complaints the Doctor wouldn’t take me seriously. Both our complaints were vastly different from each other’s. This, I now recognize, may not have been the wisest approach.

In the sterile halls of clinics, as I sought answers for my son, I realized I couldn't afford to be a passive spectator in my own life, swallowed by generic prescriptions and endless medical rigmarole. After some extensive research, I embarked on an elimination diet. I parted ways with familiar companions like coffee, added sugars, dairy, and even vegetables, only to reintroduce them to no avail. It wasn't until I eliminated highly processed carbohydrates that I sensed the first whispers of relief.

A fog lifted, both literally and metaphorically. The mental fog that had clouded my thoughts began to dissipate, and the vice-like grip of pain slowly slackened, though it was not entirely gone. Upon reintroducing carbs, the pain and deep-seated ache returned with a vengeance. Listening closely to my body, I realised that the pain peaked around an hour after eating gluten-rich foods - bread, cereals, cakes, and pasta. This revelation spurred me to take definitive action. I bid farewell to the staples of my upbringing. What were once sources of comfort were now unmasked as covert culprits. From my favorite chocolate bar to the occasional indulgence in crisps, and even the innocent-seeming gravy, the list seemed endless. I couldn't justify inflating my food budget for myself alone. I opted for one loaf of gluten-free bread and a packet of biscuits, both were priced double of the ‘standard’. The rest of my diet saw substitutions with potatoes, rice, or veggies. I became a bit of a fan of bolognese mince and sauce replacing pasta with broccoli. Time was a luxury I couldn't afford to squander on self-pity. I ate what I needed.

Within days of re-embracing my new way of eating, it felt like a revelation. The transformation was staggering. Tormenting pain gave way to serene stillness. No longer reliant on painkillers, I discovered a newfound peace. Since that pivotal juncture, my life has unfolded in vibrant hues. Joints no longer creak, and the thunderous ache has become a distant memory. Headaches have released their grip, ushering in a new era of clarity. More than anything, I was grateful the pain had ceased completely and for good this time. The oppressive weight lifted, unveiling a clarity I never knew existed.

Adopting a gluten-free path wasn't just a shift in diet; it was a seismic shift in my entire existence. I'd been raised on a diet steeped in gluten, a tradition that persisted into adulthood. It was filling, budget-friendly, and questioning it was not an option. This transition was a declaration - a declaration that transformation is possible, that vitality is within reach and we needn't let generational habits shackle us. We hold the power to redefine our narrative, to seize control of our well-being.

If you've journeyed with me this far, I'm grateful. I hope my story resonated with you, offering a glimmer of understanding or perhaps a helpful nudge. It's no easy feat to go against the grain, but always stay true to yourself, listen to your intuition, and honor your body.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Bella
